When I arrived at my house, Marina, Blitz and Carla were having drinks in the reading room. Nipper was also there with them, which is always quite enjoyable if you feel like getting licked to death.

“Dinner's at eight,” said Carla, lifting her glass and spilling a splash on her clownish green-and-white-striped pants. It's hard to describe how bad she looked. Every time I saw her she looked a little worse.

“You cooked again?” I tried to sound like I disapproved.

“Just a little lasagna thing. Cooking really relaxes me.”

Marina, who must have come in quite recently because her mushroom turban was still on the chair, told me to have a seat. Blitz offered me a cocktail; i.e., ginger ale, decrepit cherry afloat on top, and they told me about the memorial they'd be having for Frank on Saturday.

“And afterward,” Marina said, “we're having a reception here. Courtesy of Blitz.” We all turned around to look at him and he waved us off as if to say 'twas nothing at all. “It will just be Frank's family,” Marina said, “and whatever old friends we can dig up here.”

Carla nodded over her drink. “There are lots of people I'd like to see. I think I can help you track some down.” Then, turning to me, “And I hope you'll also invite your friends—to the party, I mean, after the memorial. Magda, of course, and I'd love to meet Will. Some fresh young faces to cheer us up.” I almost choked on my ginger ale. The idea of us cheering anyone up. It was obvious she was drunk again.
